The St. Maries Rural Fire Protection District was founded in 1977.  In 2001, the District was renamed the St. Maries Fire Protection District.  The District covers approximately 83 square miles and provides fire and rescue services to Benewah and Kootenai counties, including the cities of St. Maries and Harrison.  The community is served by 24 dedicated volunteer firefighters, supported by a paid administrative staff of 3 which includes the Fire Chief,  the Deputy Chief, and the Administrative Assistant/Treasurer.  The three member Board of Commissioners is elected from citizens living within the fire district boundaries.
